Description
In 1994, we invented our first-ever Merino wool performance sock, the Classic Hike. And today, that comfort comes full circle. Our new Second Cut™ Hike sock combines the iconic fit and feel of our original sock with circular yarn utilized from our sock takeback program. That’s right. We’re making new socks out of old socks—helping us reach our goal of shifting towards a more circular business model. Join the mission by sending us your unwanted socks and we’ll work to give them life beyond the landfill.

The Second Cut™ Project is our commitment to circularity.
In 1994, we invented our first-ever Merino wool performance sock, the Classic Hike. Today, we’re releasing a limited-edition using the socks that were almost thrown away.
Smartwool x ISPO
And it couldn’t have been received any better—even taking home a prestigious 2023 ISPO Award, a prestigious recognition in the sports industry that serves as a seal of quality for innovative sports products and services.
"With the Second Cut Hike Sock Smartwool impressively demonstrates that worn-out socks are more than disposable items. An ambitious, innovative project, and thus an important signal to close the loop in outdoor clothing and turn old into new instead of creating waste."
